A surgical technician (also called a surgical technologist or “scrub tech”) is a healthcare professional who supports surgeons, nurses, and the operating room team before, during, and after surgical procedures. They prepare the operating room, sterilize and arrange instruments, ensure equipment is functioning, maintain a sterile environment, and assist by passing instruments and supplies during surgery. Their work is essential to patient safety and smooth surgical procedures.
Skills Developed
Students training to become surgical technicians develop a strong foundation in sterile technique, infection control, and surgical instrumentation, learning how to prepare the operating room, maintain a sterile field, and assist the surgical team during procedures. They gain skills in equipment setup and troubleshooting, patient positioning, and instrument sterilization, while also building strong communication, teamwork, and critical-thinking abilities. Throughout their training, students learn to work with precision, adapt under pressure, and uphold high standards of safety, ethics, and patient care.
