A sterile processing technician is a healthcare professional responsible for cleaning, sterilizing, assembling, and distributing surgical instruments and medical equipment. They ensure all tools used in patient care are safe, functional, and free of contamination. Working behind the scenes in hospitals and surgery centers, they play a crucial role in infection prevention and support the surgical team by preparing instrument trays, managing sterilization equipment, and maintaining strict adherence to safety and regulatory standards.
Skills Developed
Students training to become sterile processing technicians develop strong skills in instrument cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization, learning to operate and maintain specialized equipment while assembling and inspecting surgical instrument sets with precision. They gain knowledge of infection prevention, aseptic practices, and regulatory standards such as OSHA, CDC, and AAMI guidelines. Throughout their training, students build attention to detail, time-management abilities, and effective communication skills as they support the surgical team and help ensure patient safety.
